Ruto Reveals Reasons for Endorsing Raila's AU Commission Bid

President William Ruto has voiced his support for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's candidacy as the next chairperson of the African Union Commission.
In a statement on Saturday, Ruto highlighted the consensus among East African Community leaders to rally behind Odinga's bid for the AUC chairmanship. He confirmed consultations with regional leaders and emphasized their agreement to endorse Odinga. Ruto expressed confidence in Odinga's capabilities to manage the responsibilities of the AU Commission office proficiently.
President Ruto stressed the importance of Kenya having sufficient representation in various international roles, noting a perceived deficit in this regard. He referenced Kenya's previous support for Amina Mohamed's candidacy in the AU Commission election, acknowledging her commendable performance but failure to secure the position. Ruto views Odinga's candidacy as another favourable opportunity for Kenya to nominate a candidate for the AU position.
The President emphasizes that the decision to endorse Odinga should not be construed as a political manoeuvre but rather as one aimed at advancing Kenya's interests on the continental stage. He calls for unity among Kenyans in addressing national matters and stresses the importance of collective action to benefit the country. The current chairperson of the AU Commission Moussa Faki of Chad is set to conclude his term next year with the election for his successor scheduled for February 2025.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga has affirmed his commitment to serving the African continent and Kenya should he secure the chairmanship of the African Union Commission. Speaking in Kibra on Saturday, Raila assured his supporters that even in his role at the AU Commission he would remain actively engaged in ensuring the smooth functioning of affairs within his home country. The former Prime Minister addressed speculations regarding his potential absence, stating unequivocally that he would not distance himself from Kenya's political landscape.
The Azimio leader stresses his intention to maintain a hands-on approach to national matters while also dedicating himself to the broader concerns of the African continent. Raila dismisses any notions of detachment from domestic affairs, affirming his readiness to heed the call of the people should they require his leadership in the future.
