United Nations Warns of Chaos in Kenya Over Election Boycott Threats

United Nations has warned National Super Alliance (NASA) that boycotting the October 26th repeat poll could plunge the country to chaos.

The global body, however, commended both NASA and Jubilee for agreeing to take part in discussions with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

In a statement released on Wednesday, the UN asked politicians to ensure the country remains united during, and after the elections. "The responsibility for successful elections lies not just with the electoral management body but with the entire range of stakeholders."

It also asked all stakeholders in the election to ensure that the repeat poll is held within the 60 days as ordered by the Supreme Court.

NASA led by its presidential candidate Raila Odinga has alluded to a possibility of boycotting the election if its demands to the IEBC are not looked into. Speaking on Tuesday after a meeting with IEBC, Siaya Senator James Orengo said none of their "irreducible minimums" had been met, maintaining that there will be no election.

The UN further expressed confidence with IEBC's ability to deliver the fresh poll as ordered by the Supreme Court. "The United Nations appeals to all stakeholders to respect the independence of constitutionally mandated institutions, especially the IEBC and the Judiciary."

It also cautioned against anti-IEBC protests called by the opposition leader to force out some IEBC officials including CEO Ezra Chiloba. "The United Nations further reminds all stakeholders of their obligations to uphold the rule of law and respect human rights, including peaceful protest and protection of life and property."
