Kenyan Lawyer Cliff Ombeta: Why I Can't Travel to the US
Top Kenyan lawyer Cliff Ombeta says American officials warned him that he would be arrested if he ever sets foot in the United States.
Speaking during an interview with Standard Digital, Ombeta said he clashed with officers from the America's Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), who were investigating the family of slain suspected Kenyan drug baron Ibrahim Akasha over drug trafficking claims.
Ombeta, who was representing the Akashas who were deported to the US to face drug trafficking charges, said trouble began when he learnt that the DEA detectives were trailing him in Mombasa.
"Yes, at one point, I realized the DEA were trailing me and when I was in a Mombasa hotel, I found one taking pictures of me using their laptops," he said, adding that he took the laptop and threw it in the ocean.
"I took the laptop and threw it in the ocean. They told me if I set foot in America they will arrest me for destroying government property.
"But America is not heaven. I am very comfortable in Kenya. I have no reason to visit America."
The lawyer said the Akashas are innocent and that they were framed by the US government. The Akashas are accused to smuggling drugs into the US and are currently being tried by an American court.
"No way. It was a set-up. They were set-up by the American government. The case was heard in Kenyan courts and we won the extradition case."
"The government appealed and two days before the court of appeal gave their ruling, American marines burst into their house, arrested them and took them to America. We were fighting against a system that had already decided the fate of the two innocent boys," Ombeta said.
