Family Urges Government to Bring Home Kenyan Woman in ICU Following Alleged Assault in Oman

A family in Machakos County has appealed to the Kenyan government to help bring home Stella Nabwire, a Kenyan domestic worker who is in intensive care in Oman after an alleged assault by her employer. 

Her relatives say the 43-year-old mother of three is in critical condition and urgently needs government intervention. Stella's family in Mlolongo said she travelled to Oman to secure a better future for her children and improve her family's financial situation. 

Instead, they received news that she had been admitted to hospital with serious injuries, leaving them deeply concerned about her condition. They are calling for her immediate repatriation and a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her injuries.

The case has renewed concerns about the safety of Kenyan migrant workers in the Middle East, particularly domestic workers who often live and work in isolation. Labour rights groups have repeatedly raised concerns about reports of abuse and exploitation, arguing that many workers have limited legal protection when problems arise.

Campaigners say Kenya should strengthen its labour agreements with countries that employ Kenyan workers, improve oversight of recruitment agencies, and respond more quickly when citizens abroad face difficulties. They argue that Stella's case reflects wider challenges that continue to expose migrant workers to abuse.

Stella's family is urging the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the State Department for Diaspora Affairs to intervene without delay. They say bringing her back to Kenya would allow her to receive treatment closer to her family while ensuring the government investigates the allegations.
