The government has expressed optimism that Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) will pass the recent audit by United States Transport department.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said results of the audit will be out in the next six weeks. "The results of this audit will be out in six weeks time and we expect to have performed well,” Macharia said.
If Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) passes the audit, then it will be granted the last point of departure status, paving the way for Kenya-US direct flights.
US Transportation Security Administration officials were in the country two weeks ago for a four-day audit of the Kenya's largest entry point.
Macharia said the government has set June, 2018 as a possible commencement date for direct flights between the two states.
If the US team grants JKIA a last point of departure status, only one hurdle will be standing on the way for Kenya to attain the direct flights mile. The last permit will be for Kenya Airways to acquire Air Operator Certificate from the FAA after inspection of its equipment and facilities.
