President Ruto Vows to Boost the Number of Kenyans Working Abroad

President Ruto has revealed plans by his administration to increase the number of Kenyans working abroad.

Speaking during a media roundtable with journalists at State House, the president termed the diaspora as a huge resource that his government is keen to tap into, saying the aim is to have Kenyans working everywhere in the world.

"I have told you about Diaspora, for example, that is a resource that we can use," Ruto said.

"Kenyans are outstanding, everywhere they go, whether it is in the tourism industry, hospitality industry, in whatever other industry they stand out globally. That is why I am saying we have a resource," he added.

The president said he intends to drive the agenda to ensure Kenyans have different skills secure opportunities abroad.

"That is why I have set up a Diaspora Affairs Ministry and there is a PS. I have told her she has no other business and must have Kenyans working everywhere," he remarked.

He argued that the move would help increase diaspora remittances from Sh400 billion to a trillion in the next few years.

A recent World Bank report ranked Kenya among Africa’s top three recipients of diaspora remittances behind Nigeria and Ghana.

The Migration and Development Brief shows Kenya received $4.1 billion (Sh503 billion) by end of November 2022, compared to $20.9 billion (Sh2.6 trillion) for Nigeria and Ghana $4.7 billion (Sh577 billion).

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs estimates that there are more than three million Kenyans living and working in the diaspora.

Let's flip this message and see how it sounds for the other end,"President Biden vows to boost the number of foreigners working in USA..."How many Americans would take kindly to this"intrusion"?
Ruto's statement is an acknowledgement that there are not enough opportunities in Kenya and that we should go and grab those created by others. If every country thought like that where would we be?Cannt we make Kenya great within?

That's what happens when you derail from the script. You tend to utter something that is not well thought out,but you think sounds good.
Does Ruto ever read about the mistreatment and killings of our sisters in the Arab world? In fact I think another one passed away in Saudi this week...Most Kenyans in diaspora would love to live and work in their own country if conditions and remunerations for their sweat were comparable,or even 80% closer.
What will happen if somehow technology takes up the slake in these foreign countries to the point that they do not need outside labor?

All he's doing is nothing more than a continual attempt to setting himself up in good standing with the United States; good foreign relations w/ one of the greatest- the cream of the crop for various reasons one being to continually encourage Americans to fall in love with Kenya or the idea of investing in Kenya.

Do you see what I see?

Hmmmm just send them out... Send all the bright ones out.... Make sure the ones who remain are wallowing in hunger and poverty, and high cost of living, entangled in corruption and do not have the liver to speak against the wrongdoings of the government in place? Huh! What if those diasporans realize that the same thing happened to the slaves couple of decades ago? What if those Kenyans you are so eager to send out, stop remitting money to Kenya?

I am a recent diaspora returnee. One of the major challenges in this place is the cost of doing business. Cost of energy, dishonesty, harassment and senior government officials wanting a piece of the action etc. Many many jobs would be created if major challenges are addressed.

@Viazi Karai, credible sources have been know to cite those concerns you mentioned as the reasons for Aliko Dangote, the richest Naija investor from not investing in Kenya.
Some may be quick to argue that just about all countries have their own huddles that impede investments.True, and some most can live with. But constant corruption in Kenya is a cut above.A big deterrent.

Slavery at best. It's time for Kenyans themselves to take matters into their own hands and work to create jobs at home.
Mr President, Change the status quo. Change the education. Have our government teach our kids in local languages do everything for our people and jobs will be found at home.
You are working against our people by planning to ship slaves abroad.
Talk about sufferings experienced by Kenyans abroad. How many are ending up in jail due to lack of understanding of foreign cultures. How many end up disabled. How many are buried abroad and how many are brought home dead.
Do not work to disintegrate our families. It's time to as those Kenyans who are abroad to come home, re- unite with their families and bring home the skilled they have learned.
Kenyans start asking and campaigning for your brothers and sisters to come home and help uplift your families.
Time is now!!!

A non diaspora president will never understand diaspora issues. Diaspora left bc of lack of jobs so pushing Kenyans out means zero effort in job creation or making conditions favorable for creators. President you must not ride on prosperity of diaspora who've suffered and some died to harvest USD. Diaspora is a symptom of bad governance and corruption. Not a cure for economic problems. But you can apologize to them and channel their finances into useful investments devoid of stealing.

I just came back home after a long time abroad. It is not as glamorous as it looks from this end. The cost of living is quite high and those countries expect you to pay taxes there as well. I was lucky in that I managed to hustle and save some money to re-invest back at home, but this is not typical. The solution, as many have suggested, is creating jobs back here at home. God willing, I will start some sort of business and help another person so that they won`t see a need to go abroad.
