Kenyan Middle-Distance Runner Eliud Kipsang Dies of Cardiac Arrest in Alabama

The athletics world is in mourning following the sudden death of Kenyan middle-distance runner Eliud Kipsang, who passed away in Alabama at the age of 24 from cardiac arrest.

Kipsang's death marks a tragic end to a promising career that had only recently begun to gain international traction. Kipsang had been based in the United States since 2020, making a name for himself as a standout performer for the University of Alabama's track and field team before turning professional. His death was confirmed to athletics news outlet Citius Mag by a university spokesperson, sending shockwaves through the sporting community, particularly among those familiar with his rapid ascent.

Born in Kapsang, Uasin Gishu County, a region renowned for producing world-class distance runners, Kipsang demonstrated exceptional athletic prowess from a young age. His breakthrough moment came in 2022 when he shattered the NCAA 1500m record with a remarkable time of 3:33.74. Although his record was later surpassed by American runner Liam Murphy earlier this year, Kipsang's achievement remains a significant milestone in his career and solidified his status as one of the most formidable middle-distance runners in collegiate athletics.

In December 2023, Kipsang signed a sponsorship deal with Adidas, signalling his readiness to compete at the highest professional level. Known for his focus and determination, Kipsang was poised to make a substantial impact on the global athletics scene. Peers and coaches have consistently described him as a driven and disciplined athlete, characteristics that have made his untimely passing all the more devastating.

In the wake of Kipsang's death, tributes have poured in across social media, reflecting the profound sorrow felt by those who knew him. Friends, teammates, and fellow athletes have expressed their grief, painting a picture of a young man whose presence was as inspiring off the track as it was on it. Kipchirchir Collins, a close friend, wrote on Facebook, "My heart is shattered into a million pieces to share the news of Eliud Kipsang's passing. He was promising and really good at what he did. For those who knew him closely, they can attest to his aura of confidence and determination, a hurricane in its perfect power."

Josphat Kiptoo highlighted the loss, writing, "My brother, you left us too soon. Remember the plans we had? I promise we shall forever remember you... REST IN PEACE my friend."

Abu Maru from Kipsang's home village of Kapsang, paid tribute to Kipsang, calling him a "sports king" and extending condolences to his family and community, adding, "May his soul rest in eternal peace." David Kiplagat reflected on the fragility of life, stating, "He had a bright future, but death knows no boundaries... may the Almighty grant you strength to withstand and bear the loss."

Kipsang's athletic journey was one of consistent progress and notable achievements. After arriving in the United States in 2019, he joined the University of Alabama, where he pursued a degree in public health while competing in the NCAA circuit. His collegiate career was marked by consistent excellence, beginning with his debut at the SEC Championships in the five-mile run.

His defining moment in 2022, when he set the NCAA 1500m record, showcased his raw talent and his capacity to compete at the highest levels of athletics. His success in collegiate athletics soon attracted the attention of sponsors, ultimately leading to his professional signing with Adidas.

His passing follows the recent death of another Kenyan athlete, Joan Jepngetich, who died in a car accident in the United States on Christmas night, 2024. Jepngetich, also 24, was involved in a single-vehicle crash that resulted in her car catching fire, marking another devastating loss for Kenya's athletics community.

Currently, efforts are underway to repatriate Kipsang's body to Kenya, and a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist with the process, ensuring his family and community can bid him a proper farewell.
