Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Promises to Give County Government Jobs to Street Families

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has promised that the county government will give jobs to street children in Nairobi’s Central Business District.

The county boss said that his government will absorb the street people as cleaners as well as provide them with housing.

Speaking when he met a group of the street children at City Hall, the governor promised them the county will work with them.

“I am committed to working with you I hope you will not disappoint me. I will pay your rent for one month but make sure you don’t come back to the streets,” said Sonko.

Sonko agreed with them that he will only take care of the street children on condition that they quit drugs, crime and leave the streets.

“We are ready to leave the streets; you will not see us on the streets once we get a place to stay,” indicated one of the street children.

More than 2,000 street children were rehabilitated in Nairobi in January this year by the county government in an initiative to get them off the streets but the move failed as the number kept on increasing day by day.

The Consortium of Street Children (CSC), an international charity said that there is no official number of street children but estimates there are 250,000 and 300,000 throughout Kenya, including 60,000 in Nairobi alone.

Mike, you seem intuitive and in-touch in your plans for Nairobi. Follow your intuition but have your techies iron out the plans so that they are not only good for Nairobi dwellers but for Nairobi the international destination. Good start, good day and good luck!

Congratulations Sonko for curtailing the NASA piggy bank at city hall. That was accomplishment number one. Now they are running around confused with dry mouths.
