Police on Thursday arrested two Kenya Airways cabin crew staff and a driver at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) with substances suspected to be narcotics.
The two KQ employees were nabbed with the substances in a Kenya Airways flight headed to Cotonou, Benin with a transit in Lagos City, Nigeria on the flight path.
Sources within the police said the suspected drugs were found in suitcases belonging to the two employees. “We are waiting for analysts to carry out further tests,” a senior officer said.
Anti-Narcotic Police Unit boss Hamisi Masa said the two men are Kenyan citizens and investigations into the incident have commenced. “They are being held as verification of the substance is ongoing,” Masa said.
The flight was scheduled to take off from JKIA at 8am, but the two were taken in at around 7.45am.
In a statement, Kenya Airways promised maximum co-operation with the authorities in “getting to the bottom of the matter.” “Kenya Airways adheres to all regulations and laws of Kenya and the countries it operates in. In addition, all members of crew are trained on these regulations and laws and are expected to adhere to them at all times.” “Kenya Airways remains committed to the integrity of its operation and does not condone any illegal activities by its staff members.”
Last month, a police multi-agency team arrested two Kenya Airways staff in connection to drug trafficking racket at JKIA.
