EALA MP Simon Mbugua Charged with Robbery with Violence

East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Simon Mbugua was arraigned in court on Wednesday morning, where he was charged with robbery with violence.
Mbugua, alongside two other suspects, are accused of stealing Sh100, 000 from Timothy Kariuki, a former Nairobi Central Business District Association (NCBDA) chairman in the assault incident at Boulevard Hotel on April 30th.
“On the 30th day of April 2018 at 11am at Hotel Boulevard in Nairobi city within Nairobi County, jointly with others not before court, robbed Timothy Muceru Muriuki of Sh100,000 and immediately after the time of such robbery injured the said Timothy Muceru Muriuki,” the charge sheet stated.
The MP was arrested on Tuesday in Nairobi over claims that he hired five goons who attacked Muruiki during a press briefing at the hotel one week ago.
The goons were were captured in a video shoving, kicking and threatening him. Efforts by Muriuki to flee were futile as the rowdy gang pursued him and forced him to sit in muddy water on the road as the beat him.
Mbugua, Antony Otieno Ombok alias Jamal, and Benjamin Odhiambo alias Odhis were brought before senior principal magistrate Martha Mutuko, but denied the charges.
Other suspects identified as Brian Owino alias Orange, Michael Mbanya, and Suleiman Hussein alias Rescue are still at large.
A robbery with violence charge attracts a maximum sentence of death penalty. Mbugua and the two were freed on a Sh200,000 cash bail each.
