US Warns of Possible Terror Attacks in Kenya, Urges American Citizens to be Alert

The United States has on Monday issued a security alert to its citizens in Kenya.

In a statement dispatched by the American embassy in Nairobi, the US has urged its citizens to be cautious when in Kenya due to increased terror threats.

The embassy says it has received intelligence from credible sources that foreigners especially those from the Western countries may be targeted by terrorists in Kenya.

The embassy names Nairobi, Naivasha, Nanyuki, and the Coast region as areas targeted by the extremists.

They have been urged to be vigilant especially in public places such as shopping malls, hotels, and places of worship.

“Carefully consider before visiting places frequented by tourists and westerners monitor the local media for any new information,” the Embassy says.

“You should ensure that you have your travel documents up to date and easily accessible and also review security plans of the country.

“We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in Nairobi enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)."

The embassy says STEP will help citizens get access to the latest security updates and also makes it easier for the US embassy to contact the persons in case of an emergency.

“If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate,” the embassy says.

The alert comes two weeks after the January 15th terror attack at DusitD2 complex in Nairobi's Westlands area, where 21 people including one American national lost their lives.

Somalia-based extremist group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack citing US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.
