Fake Gold Scam: How Raila Exposed Matiang'i Impersonator

Details of how opposition leader Raila Odinga played a part in exposing Kenyan fake gold scammers have emerged.

Odinga is reported to have detected the voice of a Kenyan man who was being presented as Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i.

The Standard reports that Odinga had been invited to Dubai by Sheikh Mohammed to intervene so that his gold consignment that had purportedly been held at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) could be released.

During the meeting with Raila, Sheikh Mohammed phoned a Kenyan businessman who was facilitating the gold transaction.

The businessman then staged a conversation with a man he was claiming to be CS Matiang'i. The businessman pretended he was pleading with 'Matiang'i' to have the gold 'consignment' released.

During the conversation, the gold dealer asked Odinga to speak with Matiang'i and convince him to instruct JKIA officers to release the consignment.

However, Odinga realized the man he was speaking to was not Matiang'i since he is familiar with his voice.

“He put the phone on a loudspeaker and when Raila heard the voice of the other party, he intervened and declared it was not the CS. This ended the conversation,” The Standard quotes an official aware of the issue.

Aware of the potential diplomatic implications this would present, Odinga reportedly shared the matter with President Kenyatta. This was in April, weeks before the scandal was made public.

Late last month, Odinga and Kenyatta reportedly met the Sheikh in Dubai over the matter.

The two traveled to Dubai after attending the China Belt and Road forum in Beijing.

Several suspects have since been questioned over the gold scandal that allegedly saw Sheikh Mohammed lose Sh400 million.

Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti has indicated that Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula is among suspects lined up for questioning in connection with the scam.

“He is a person of interest, and we shall be interrogating him and all others mentioned to determine their degree of involvement,” Kinoti said.

DP Ruto with his sycophant have been attacking RAO on this matter calling him conman. Others indicating Uhuru and Matiang'i.
Some thing requires simple reasoning. If uhuru was involved in this scam DCI would not make any move. So Mr. DP continue deceiting your people.

This looks like corruption to me. Raila does not work for Kenya's department of criminal investigation- how is he supposed to intervene? Why was this gold consignment taken from DR Congo thro Uganda to Kenya instead of going straight from DR Congo to United Arab Emirates? Sounds like stolen gold from Congo.

...and the moral of the story is:
..our high and mighty are beckoned like dogs..to be wined and dined like lords...FREE travel loaded pockets..to go do odd jobs for the blooded moneys of the Arabs and colonizers.
RAO is behaving as if he was never in Kenya and just landed to find all the corruption and filth done by others. HE HAS BEEN, HE WAS, HE IS PART of the filth that Kenya is today. Period!

@GUEST1, can you cite just one corrupt big fish in Kenya that's rotting in prison because of Raila's corruption fighting efforts? Do you know Raila's kazi kwa vijana lost Ksh.300 million that Raila couldn't account for when questioned by the parliament? (Daily Nation, Nov.02,2011). What about the Kisumu molasses? Raila demanded and got a complete set of cabinet ministers during the coalition government with Kibaki rather than share the normal cabinet slots with Kibaki there by doubling, the size of the government and hence the tax payers burden. Raila asked and got millions of shillings as bribes from those he allocated cabinet posts. Cabinet seats were for sale and not Merit based. That's Raila and corruption. By the way, why is he participating in helping the royals of Arab Emirates in retrieving the gold stolen from the poor Congolese people? Why did they invite Raila to handle a police matter- or do you think they want a person without morals who can easily assist them in their corrupt and thieving endeavor? May be, perhaps they know the corrupt usual suspects that they can use and manipulate in their corruption activities. Maybe they have even done "business" with Raila before.

@mwororo aeroplanes do not operate like matatus. They don't pass and stop just anywhere like boda bodas. This consignment had to pass through Nairobi.

@njai, aeroplanes can't leave from DR Congo to overseas? Do all planes from DR Congo first have to come to Nairobi in order to go abroad? And what about Uganda? They don't have infrustracture for planes to fly overseas? Remember these gold came to Nairobi via Uganda. These are panya routes that you expect corrupt people and thieves to use when stealing gold from the innocent poor people of Congo. @njai, why did this Arab royalty pay the senator $400 million to help get the gold from whoever? Why didn't Sheikh Muhammad involve Kenya law enforcement at once if legit goods of trade we're illegally detained at JKIA? And now they invite Raila to their palace to pull out a corruption maneuver in stealing gold belonging to the Congolese people- @njai, you can't see that?
