A Nairobi court on Friday sentenced a Kenyan woman to seven years in jail for stealing a gun and phones from a police officer.
Lydia Njeri, who the judge described as a slay queen, was handed the sentence after pleading guilty to drugging and robbing a Nairobi cop.
Ms. Njeri pleaded guilty to stealing a pistol and two mobile phones from an intelligence officer earlier this year in Nairobi.
Makadara Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga jailed her for seven years without an option of a fine.
"I find that there are cases on the rise of people who call themselves slay queens. Their work is to go to clubs and look for someone to drug and steal their valuables," the judge noted.
Njeri was handed a five-year jail term for possessing a firearm without a license and two years for stealing the gun and phones from the officer identified as Peter Kilemi.
In mitigation, the accused pleaded for forgiveness saying she was a single mother and the sole breadwinner of her family.
"When I realized that I had stolen his pistol, I went and threw it in a pit latrine. I sold the phones to a Ugandan and used the money," she said.
Njeri is said to have approached the officer for a drink in a club in Nairobi's Utawala estate on January 6th, 2019.
She drugged him and stole his valuables before going into hiding for four months.
Njeri was arrested four months after the officer reported the incident. In court, the accused said she didn’t know what she was stealing from the cop.
The mother of two confessed she stole a pistol worth Sh250,000, 15 rounds of ammunition valued at Sh735 and two mobile phones worth Sh36,700.
