Uhuru Convinces the UK to Abolish Travel Advisories Against Kenya

Following bilateral talks between President Kenyatta and Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the United Kingdom has agreed to abolish travel advisories it has been imposing on Kenya over the years.

In their meeting in London on Tuesday, the two leaders pointed out that the travel warnings are not good for the country’s economy. Kenyatta and Johnson also agreed that Kenya and the UK would continue to cooperate in the fight against terrorism.

“What happens when these travel advisories are issued is that there are job losses especially in the tourism sector presenting an opportunity for the radicalization of our young people,” Kenyatta said.

“We would like to partner in combating terrorists. These criminals have continued to cause harm to our people and it is about time we combined forces to fight back,” added Kenyatta.

On his part, PM Johnson acknowledged that Kenya has borne the brunt of terrorism and promised that the British military training outpost in Nanyuki would continue to train Kenyan forces as a way of strengthening the military partnership between the two nations.

After the recent terrorist attack on Lamu’s Camp Simba military base that hosts both US and Kenyan forces, the UK issued a travel advisory to its citizens visiting Kenya, warning that terrorists might try to carry out more attacks.

The UK warned its citizens to remain vigilant when visiting areas frequented by foreigners including hotels, sporting events, shopping centers, coastal areas including beaches, and transport hubs. The UK is the fourth leading source of international tourists to Kenya behind the US, Uganda, and Tanzania.
