Uhuru Hints at Reopening of Schools and Churches

President Kenyatta on Monday signaled the gradual re-opening of schools and places of worship in the near future.

Kenyatta while addressing the nation during this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations, directed the ministries of Interior and Education to come up with safety guidelines and protocols in consultations with stakeholders.

Education institutions, churches, mosques, and temples will be required to strictly adhere to these guidelines to guarantee the safety of learners and worshippers.

“Education sector should finalize the consultations to give us an appropriate calendar for the schools to guarantee not only the safety of children but also parents. This disease is here with us and every Kenyan must take the responsibility to ensure that all is well,” Uhuru said.

At the same time, Uhuru directed the National Treasury to fast-track the disbursement of Sh2 billion to Kenya’s hospitality sector.

The funds are meant to cushion hotels from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has brought the industry to its knees.

Kenya on Monday reported 59 new cases of Covid-19, raising the total number of infections to 2,021. The number of recoveries rose by eight to 482 while the death toll from the virus jumped by five to 69.
