Two Boys Drown in School Swimming Pool in Isiolo

Brainstar Academy in Isiolo has suspended swimming lessons indefinitely following the tragic death of two boys in the school's swimming pool yesterday.

In a letter to parents, the principal stated that the school is prioritizing the safety of pupils ahead of the resumption of learning on July 4. It is reported that the swimming instructor was not present when the two friends drowned at around 3 pm. Tragically, the second boy died while trying to rescue his friend.

"This is to inform you that swimming lessons have been suspended at our school...The safety of the learners is guaranteed as we look forward to welcoming them on Tuesday," the letter read.

Isiolo Sub-County Police Commander William Kiambi told the press that the instructor is being questioned in regard to negligence. It remains unclear whether the boys were alone or with other children when the incident transpired. Questions have been raised as to why the school allowed the children to use the pool during their half-term break. It is yet to be confirmed whether the boys were enrolled as students at the school.

"We are holding the instructor as we try to understand why the boys were swimming unsupervised while investigations continue," Mr Kiambi said.

A similar incident occurred in January 2023, when two children aged 9 and 10 drowned in a hotel swimming pool at Kimana, Kajiado South. Loitoktok Sub-County Police Commander, Shadrack Ruto,  reported that the youngsters were removed from the pool and rushed to Loitoktok Sub-County Hospital, where they succumbed while receiving treatment.
