Kenyan Atheists Laud Chief Justice Koome for Proposing Lesser Punishment for Prostitution

Chief Justice Martha Koome's proposal to amend the Penal Code and reduce the punishment for prostitution has been commended by the Atheists In Kenya Society.

The society, led by President Harrison Mumia, expresses its support for the removal of Sections 153, 154, and 155 of the Penal Code, which currently imposes a prison sentence of up to 3 years for sex workers. The proposed changes would still regard prostitution as an offence, but it would be dealt with using alternative methods for handling minor offences. In their statement, the society emphasizes the importance of decriminalizing and legalizing prostitution and urges Chief Justice Koome to grant sex workers more freedom. They also emphasized the need for equal treatment and access to services for sex workers under the law.

The current provisions in the Constitution, which include imprisonment for those found guilty of prostitution, apply to both men and women. The proposed changes state that engaging in prostitution or persistently soliciting for immoral purposes in a public place is a felony. The Chief Justice seeks to remove Section 153, which pertains to living with or having control over a prostitute, as it implies aiding or compelling prostitution. Section 154 states that a woman who depends on prostitution for financial support or engages in it for gain is also guilty of a felony.

The Judiciary proposes treating prostitution as a minor offence under county by-laws, offering alternative punishments such as conditional discharges, restitution, compensation orders, suspended or deferred sentences, community service, and rehabilitation. In a statement, the Judiciary assures of their involvement in a report presented to Parliament alongside the Penal Code Amendment Bill 2023.

Interesting.Of all the people concerned, the atheists come to the 'moral'rescue of prostitutes.I would have thought that Christians would be on the fore front with the bible, saying,"he who as not sinned ,let him take a stone and throw it"...And let the prostitute walk away...
Unfortunately this so called prostitution business is riddled with hypocrisy.Take for example a sugar-baba paying rent for his twenty year old college girl in exchange for sex.Usually the girl, and the Daddy get the pass. Some would say paying dowry is a form of legalized"prostitution".Why should any buying and selling take place in marriage anyway?Aren't we all equal in the union?Well equal but separate...And I think they are right to point.Try to have man marry without sex,but with all the other benefits, but not pay dowry...I guarantee you many men will pay the dowry.Probably all. After all we pay in one form or another.

It shouldn't be surprising. Religious people especially those who love to proclaim and proselytize tend to be judgmental and hypocritical. The religious right in America comes to mind. They do a lot of the same things everyone else does but want to hold themselves up as paragons of morality. For instance they aren't really pro life as they are pro birth. Once a child is born none care about the child's welfare and they're the first in line to advocate for benefits cuts, defend police extra judicial killings and stand for the death penalty. Just saying.

@ Spot on Mundumugo. When confronted, their useless response is that,Iam only human, just like you",but I thought when you are a Christian, something sets you apart from the rest of "us sinners".

You sound like you have a lot of illegitimate children all over the map that you need others to pay some benefits to them! You don’t carelessly produce mouths you can’t feed. Have you ever heard of vasectomy? Or you can wear double rubber whenever you go moonlighting!

Jane, Jane Jane if you have been here before and read anything I post, you would know. I have one child(planned), currently a senior in college. As a true MūGīkūyū I have mburoti here and in the 254. I may not be wealthy but I do well enough and don't need anyone's benefits. In fact I recently purchased a 2024 compact for my child - I paid cash. I have been an American taxpayer for decades and if you are ever in need, I hope my small contribution to the welfare state helps you out.

So are you going through dry spell lately? You are still illegally running around with hookers! What difference does it make to you @juju to have prostitution legalized? Just keep doing what you know best - screwing with them prostitute!
