Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has acknowledged ongoing discussions with Rigathi Gachagua, the recently impeached Deputy President, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen opposition coalitions in Kenya.
Speaking at the SKM Centre while accepting an award from the National Community-Based Organizations Council, Musyoka emphasized his commitment to expanding political alliances. The revelation comes amid political realignment in Kenya, particularly following Azimio La Umoja leader Raila Odinga's unexpected collaboration with President William Ruto's administration, which has resulted in cabinet appointments for several of Odinga's allies. The Wiper leader also notes that there would be a future requirement for Azimio members to reaffirm their allegiance as the coalition expands.
"We are open to dialogue with all parties to forge a robust coalition," Musyoka stated.
Musyoka expresses strong criticism of recent political developments, particularly regarding the aftermath of protests against the Finance Bill 2024. He suggests that certain Azimio leaders are now benefiting from the sacrifices made by young protesters, specifically referencing the Generation Z demonstrators who faced significant challenges during the street protests. The Wiper leader also addresses the government's perceived failure to fulfil its commitments to families affected by police brutality during the demonstrations. He criticizes the lack of compensation and meaningful dialogue with bereaved families, suggesting that previous promises had been merely tactical manoeuvres to defuse tension.
These sentiments are reinforced by DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa, who joins in calling for accountability and justice for protest victims. Wamalwa specifically challenges President Ruto's administration over its unfulfilled promise to compensate affected families. Meanwhile, political activist Hanifa Adan has firmly rejected reports of joining the Wiper party, clarifying that her presence at a recent event was solely to present an award to Kalonzo Musyoka.
Emphasizing her non-partisan stance, Adan explains she had no prior knowledge of the press conference but used the opportunity to advocate for peace and justice for victims of violence. Her statement comes as fellow activist Kasmuel McOure announced his alignment with ODM, praising it as East and Central Africa's leading pro-people party and revealing plans to revitalize youth and student leagues nationwide.
