Gachagua Allies Challenge Government Over Mt. Kenya Region Alcohol Controls

Allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua have responded sharply to remarks made by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo concerning allegations of illicit alcohol distribution targeting the Mt. Kenya region.

Gachagua’s supporters, consisting primarily of legislators, have criticized the Kenya Kwanza administration for allegedly facilitating the resurgence of illicit alcohol in the area. In a joint statement, signed by 23 legislators under the banner of Sauti ya Wakenya, the political leaders express disappointment with Omollo's response, claiming it inadequately addresses the concerns raised by Gachagua.

They question the effectiveness of government efforts in combating the production, distribution, sale, and consumption of illicit brews during Gachagua's term, suggesting that these initiatives had previously led to a significant reduction of such brews in Mt. Kenya and nationwide. The leaders demanded clarification on whether the issue had re-emerged since Gachagua left office.

Furthermore, the legislators call on Omollo to provide information regarding 29 companies allegedly involved in the distribution of second-generation alcohol, including details about their vetting processes and responsible officers. They seek transparency concerning 15 companies that have been authorized to sell this type of alcohol, requesting specifics about their locations, product brands, packaging, and distribution areas.

The leaders have also inquired whether the 13 companies recently licensed by Omollo are to operate solely within the Mt. Kenya region and whether he vetted these entities. In a subsequent response, Omollo dismissed Gachagua's allegations as selfish and politically motivated, condemning the former Deputy President's remarks made during a church service.

He accused Gachagua of alleging that the government was deliberately targeting the Mt. Kenya region with illicit and counterfeit alcohol, describing these claims as reckless and disingenuous. Omollo emphasizes that Gachagua's statements trivialized a serious issue that profoundly affects families and communities.

Omollo articulated concerns that Gachagua's remarks, which pertain to significant national issues, could potentially breach legal boundaries and criticized the former Deputy President for lacking empathy for families impacted by the crisis of illicit and counterfeit alcohol.
