Kenya's Political Leaders Clash Over Abductions In Front of Ruto

At the funeral of Moses Wetang'ula's mother, President William Ruto addressed concerns regarding abductions and forced disappearances of government critics.

Ruto assured attendees that he has implemented decisive measures aimed at eradicating such practices, which have resulted in the tragic discovery of bodies in rivers and national parks. He noted that financial independence for the National Police Service has been reallocated to the Inspector General of Police, a move intended to ensure impartial investigations and uphold the rule of law.

Amidst the ongoing debate, the President cautions social media users against inciting violence and disparaging his leadership, stressing the potential repercussions on Kenya's international standing. Ruto urges citizens to adhere to the rule of law and strive to cultivate a positive national image.

The discourse surrounding this issue has intensified, with President Ruto's allies accusing political opponents of staging self-abductions to damage the government's reputation and seek foreign funding. Cotu Secretary General Francis Atwoli, along with National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, alleged that these actions are aimed at undermining the government.

Conversely, Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya rejected these claims, advocating for greater tolerance and urging the government to address cases of missing persons effectively. Governor Natembeya further criticized the economic conditions in the Western region of Kenya, alleging that leaders close to President Ruto have neglected its development.

In response, Ichung’wah suggested that Natembeya find suitable platforms for discussing these economic concerns, and dismissed his critiques regarding abductions. Meanwhile, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, alongside other leaders accompanying the President, emphasized the need for strict enforcement of cybercrime laws to mitigate incitement on social media.

They reaffirmed the importance of respecting the law and ensuring accountability for those who violate it. In his address, President Ruto highlighted key achievements of his administration, which include reductions in fertilizer prices, enhancements in the Competence-Based Curriculum, the hiring of additional teachers, and revitalization efforts in the sugar sector.

He announced plans to introduce bonuses for sugarcane farmers and encouraged those with pending court cases to withdraw them, aiming to facilitate smoother operations at Mumias Sugar Company.
