The Kenyan government plans to automate the issuance of national identity cards (IDs) to citizens upon reaching 18 years of age, leveraging existing birth data to streamline the process and enhance national security.
This is according to an announcement by the Ministry of Interior. Speaking at a press briefing at Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge, Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen defended the government's ID vetting system, stating that it is a nationwide initiative designed to address security gaps, particularly in border regions. Contrary to common belief, Murkomen emphasizes that the vetting process extends beyond Northern Kenya to encompass all border towns, clarifying that President Ruto's directive on the matter was focused on border security rather than political targeting.
Under the new system, eligible citizens will no longer need to apply for IDs but will instead collect them from designated government offices once they reach the age of majority. This automation aims to improve efficiency and reduce bureaucratic hurdles. In addition to the ID automation, Murkomen highlights ongoing reforms within the Ministry of Interior.
Passport processing times have been reduced to seven days, while ID acquisition now takes ten days. The government has also digitized over 20,000 services to improve public service delivery and lower the cost of doing business. Murkomen has also addressed police reforms, including the provision of vehicles, modern equipment, and improved welfare for officers.
Plans are underway to recruit additional officers and relocate prisons from urban areas, with the construction of new facilities to support the prison department’s operations and revenue generation. During the briefing, Murkomen expressed condolences to the family of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati, who recently passed away in Nairobi. He acknowledged Chebukati's commitment and resilience in navigating the politically sensitive role.
