Historic Success for Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania at CHAN 2024

A wave of excitement is sweeping across East Africa as all three co-host nations—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania—have qualified for the quarter-finals of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024.

This collective success marks a significant moment for football in the region, which has often been overshadowed by dominant teams from North and West Africa. Uganda’s qualification was particularly dramatic. Playing against South Africa in Kampala, the Cranes staged a remarkable late comeback. Trailing 3-1 with only minutes remaining, Uganda scored two penalties to draw 3-3 and secure the top position in Group C, overtaking Algeria.

This result marks Uganda’s first-ever quarter-final appearance after seven attempts at CHAN. South Africa initially controlled the match after overturning an early deficit with goals from Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Thabiso Kutumela, and Ndlondlo Ndabayithethwa. However, Uganda’s Allan Okello and Rogers Torach calmly converted penalties late in the game, with the latter confirmed by VAR in the 96th minute, sealing Uganda’s advancement.

Algeria, meanwhile, drew 0-0 with Niger in Nairobi, failing to take advantage and finishing behind Uganda with seven points. Kenya and Tanzania had already secured their places earlier in the week, adding to the region’s celebrations. Kenya, making their debut in the tournament, topped Group B and will now face Madagascar at home in Nairobi. Tanzania, qualifying from Group A for the first time in three attempts, will host Morocco in Dar es Salaam. Both quarter-final matches are scheduled for Friday, with East African supporters eager to see their teams progress further.

Uganda, as Group C winners, will face the runners-up of Group D in Kampala on Saturday, with their opponents yet to be confirmed. Group D remains highly competitive, with Sudan, defending champions Senegal, and Congo all competing for quarter-final spots. Sudan currently leads the group, level on points with Senegal, while Congo must win their final match against already-eliminated Nigeria to advance.

Sudan and Senegal are set to meet in Zanzibar in a crucial fixture, where only a victory will secure progression for either team.
