Governor Mike Sonko Seeks to Hike Nairobi Parking Fees

Nairobi residents could soon be forced to dig deeper into their pockets if a new Bill by Governor Mike Sonko’s administration is approved by the County Assembly.

In the new Bill, Sonko seeks to raise fees charged on various County government services such as parking and garbage collection. The move is part of his administration's bid to raise more revenue for 2018/19 financial year.

The administration believes the move will raise more revenue to finance the Sh34 billion City Hall budget for financial year ending June 2019.

The proposal is contained in the County’s Revised 2018/19 Finance Bill presented before the County Budget and Appropriations Committee on Monday.

If passed, parking fees for private cars will increase from the current Sh300 to Sh400 while trailers will be charged Sh6, 000 for parking and offloading, Sh4,000 for lorries and Sh2,000 for canters.

Further, the Bill proposes Sh1,000 monthly fee for each of the Boda bodas operating from the Central Business District.

Tuk tuks operating outside the Central Business District will be charged Sh1,500 monthly, while Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) wishing to reserve space in the city centre will pay Sh250,000 per year.

Governor Sonko also seeks raise more money by introducing a new Sh100 garbage collection fee for residents in slum areas.

Residents of middle-income estates will part with Sh300 per month for garbage collection while those in the high-end estates will pay Sh500.

Kenyans should stop complaining. Why did you pass a constitution without a plan to finance it?How did you hope to fund 48 governments with the only known resources being CORRUPTION and FOREIGN LOANS?I also wonder if Sonko & Co.have fixed the drainage system before ot starts raining.
