130,000 Voters Sign Petition for Impeachment of Kiambu Governor Waititu

A lobby group dubbed Okoa Kiambu is this week set to present a memorandum to the county assembly asking MCAs to expedite the process of impeaching Governor Ferdinand Waititu.

The group said it will present a petition for the impeachment of Waititu to the assembly on Wednesday over claims of corruption and abuse of office.

Waititu and his wife Susan Wangari are accused of conspiring to defraud the county of Sh588 million through the issuance of irregular road tenders to their proxies in exchange for kickbacks.

The trial is expected to run from January 21st to February 6th, 2020, with the prosecution indicating that 68 witnesses are lined up to testify against Waititu and nine others.

Okoa Kiambu said it has collected 130,000 signatures from Kiambu voters and will submit the petition to the county assembly.

“On Wednesday next week, we will gather at Ndumberi Stadium for a rally that is being organized by community-based organizations and later submit the signatures to the assembly for action,” said Hoswell Kinuthia, an official of Okoa Kiambu.

Deputy Governor James Nyoro took charge after the court barred Waititu from accessing county offices after he was charged with graft.

“We are aware that Mr. Waititu is using MCAs and some county executives to impede Mr. Nyoro from running the affairs of the county effectively,” claimed Kinuthia.

Kinuthia said they will write to President Kenyatta to dissolve the county and call for fresh elections if the assembly fails to ouster Waititu.
