Dr. Nira Patel: Kenya Loses Another Senior Doctor to Covid-19
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has announced the death of yet another senior doctor, Dr. Nira Patel.
Dr. Patel, a dental surgeon specialized in orthodontics, succumbed to Covid-19 complications on Saturday, according to the union.
“We mourn the passing on of Dr. Nira Patel due to COVID-19 complications. A dental surgeon specialized in orthodontics, a mentor to many, and was recently bestowed with the life membership of the Kenya Dental Association. Condolences to the family & friends. May her soul Rest In Peace,” KMPDU wrote on Saturday.
She becomes the latest medic to die from the infection after nephrologist Dr. Anthony Were, who passed away on Friday night.
Until his death, Prof. Were was the Head of the Renal Unit at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
The kidney specialist died while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital, where he had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for 10 days.
He was also the president of the African Association of Nephrology and Deputy Director of the East African Kidney Institute. Were, 64, previously served as a senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi.

The rate in which Kenya is losing doctors and nurses will present a great challenge to Kenya's capacity to provide its citizens with adequate health services. The health care workers' proximity to people with the coronavirus puts them in danger all the time. Majority of them don't have enough or adequate PPEs to protect themselves while on duty. The Kenyan government needs to prioritize healthcare workers' safety and invest in effective PPEs and expand health care facilities so that they are not working in congested indoor facilities, which are a recipe for disaster.
If we lose more healthcare workers, who will take care of patients in Kenya? We are losing doctors with expertise that take years to develop. Who will fill the gaps. The rate of graduation of doctors in Kenya is very low. Will Kenya have to import doctors to cop with the demand? Prevention is better than cure. Protect doctors from the coronavirus and the general public. We cannot treat ourselves out of the coronavirus. We need prevention, prevention, prevention.
As vaccines become viable, the government needs to purchase them immediately and prioritize healthcare workers and vulnerable populations. It should not be first the politicians and their families.I hope for once, our leaders will put selfishness and corruption aside and focus on saving our people.
