Popular Activist Mutemi wa Kiama Arrested over Widely Shared Uhuru, Ruto Posters

Popular Kenyan activist Mutemi wa Kiama has been paraded in court over alleged cybercrime offenses.

Mutemi was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly making two widely circulated posters bearing the portraits of President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto.

He spent the night at Nairobi Central Police Station and was arraigned before Senior Principal Magistrate Jane Kamau of Milimani law courts on Wednesday.

State Prosecutor Joseph Riungu sought to have Mutemi detained for 14 days to allow police to complete investigations but defense lawyer Martha Karua objected.

The magistrate ordered the accused be detained until Thursday when the court will make a ruling on the prosecution’s application.

The two posters that landed Mutemi in trouble warned the international community against lending money to the government of Kenya.

They are part of an ongoing campaign by Kenyans online to compel the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to cancel a recent loan of Sh255 billion to Kenya.

A poster with the image of President Uhuru stated that “This is to notify the world at large that the person whose photograph and names appear above is not authorized to act or transact on behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Kenya and that the nation and the future generations shall not be held liable for any penalties of bad loans negotiated and/or borrowed by him.”

The one for Ruto stated that “This is to notify the world at large that the person whose photograph and names appear above is not suitable for public office. He is therefore not authorized to act or transact on behalf of the citizens of the Republic of Kenya and that the nation and the future generations shall not be held liable for any looting and penalties accruing from his grand looting schemes.”

As of Wednesday, nearly 300,000 Kenyans had signed an online petition asking the international lender to cancel the loan meant to boost Kenya’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kenyans cup of wrath is nearly full. Will they do a successful revolution to drive Uhuru out of State House? Probably not. No precedent. Social media is a bad outlet that lets out steam and prevents the required explosion!!

Inspekta mathenge what are you doing about it? U voted Uhuru 3x and now expect someone else to remove him. IMF is out to make money out of opportunity provided.
My solution is impeach the man and that takes legislative arm. Another is a national strike to wake him up from booze and weed. I don't believe in illegal means. State your solution

Freedom of speech is no where in the Kenyan constitution. Only in America can you speak freely and remain free.

Looking at the id number you can tell it is fake. The only difference is that one end with 18 and the other one 19. I do not know how they give the id numbers in Kenya but I guess those 2 numbers could be given to people who when to get the id at the same time and from the same county.

Civilian revolution in Kenya is impossible unless high profile political figures lead the street revolution from the front. But that won't happen because they are all benefitting from corruption..and the security forces are all brainwashed. They can't see the future of Kenya in utterly ruins. We the weak masses will continue to suffer and our sweat hard worker investments will only end in losses. Please Covid, take these big tummies corrupt leaders in Kenya with you.

We'll go round in circles and then to square 1 like we always do. It is evident that Kenyans are already paying dearly for the mistake of electing greedy, uncouth, misinformed and corrupt leaders. Na bado, the real pain and loss is yet to come. Those who have realized that the country's downward path is steadier than ever should have a strategy in dealing with the situation and those answerable. These silly outbursts when China does this...and IMF does that... are like a teenager's tantrums that die down eventually and make for good pub jokes. Wanna have some real change, starts with you and me, stop voting along nepotistic and tribal lines, embrace what we face as a country TRULY together, anticipate how tough it will be putting the country together even if it means having empty pockets. Diasporans are the silliest of the lot, even if "they" know better, "they" will incur double/triple loses. So somethings have to change, diasporans are not cushioned in any way yet all/most of their investments are tied up in Kenya.
