President Uhuru Orders a Nationwide Crackdown on Boda-Boda Operators

President Kenyatta has ordered a nationwide crackdown on boda-boda operators following a disturbing incident where a female driver was sexually assaulted in Nairobi.

While condemning the incident, the president instructed law enforcement officers to clamp down on rogue boda-boda riders and ensure the perpetrators of the heinous act are brought to book.

“…I did give instructions that I have ordered a crackdown on all boda-boda operators starting here in Nairobi and moving all across the country,” Kenyatta said on Tuesday.

“So I have instructed the relevant law enforcement officers to use the instruments within the law to punish the culprits.”

He also directed a fresh registration of all boda-boda operators across the country as part of the government efforts to ensure sanity in the sector.

“We are going to reregister you all again and we must make sure that we safeguard women. There should never be a repeat of what we saw,” he added.

Kenyatta was speaking during the International Women’s Day celebrations at the Kenya School of Government in Lower Kabete, Nairobi.

On Monday, 16 boda-boda riders were arrested in connection with the sexual assault of the female motorist.

A video of the incident shows a group of men, believed to be boda-boda operators, undressing the woman and trying to pull her out. The victim can be heard screaming as the men molest her.

Police said the incident happened last Friday at around 5:00 pm after the woman, who was driving from Limuru, knocked down a pedestrian, prompting boda-boda riders to accost her.

The victim was rescued by police officers, who were around the scene of the incident. She sustained fractures on the leg and is admitted to Kiambu Level IV Hospital.

Please stop issuing threats and reacting to situations UK that needed to be positively addressed. It has gotten out of hand as we speak, with these lawless youth. These are things you should have planned for, though the claim is: "Ni kazi wamekosa, na wataninyima kura".

waKamau/Ngina announcement is just PR as long term solution to this madness is creation of jobs and taming corruption. But it is sad that the Kiruru presso want to add more useless MPs,his girlfriends and old retired gangsterss like 98 year old ANGLOLISHING thug,Awoli.Kiruru is watching as factories are being relocated to neighboring countries due heavy taxation and corruption.Kiruru prefers importing expensive maize and wheat to subsiding the price of fertilizer and other production materials for local farmers.

Great job Mr. President. This was long overdue. As much as anyone would like to defend bonda bonda riders truth be told the sector has some bad elements criminals, gangs etc who need to be flushed out. Accidents will always happen and we cannot continue to entertain rogue bonda bonda riders to continue with this madness of harassing drivers/pedestrians in the name of justice. Some of them I believe will not even dare get good conduct certificate from police for the obvious reasons.

OMG,
When did we get to this point Kenyans?
"The victim could be heard as the men molest her"!!Really? In broad daylight?
Do we have LAWS in Kenya or do the LAWS have us?
This is beyond comprehension...It's even hard to start thinking about this accident.Traumatizing.Does it mean women mustn't be driving then? Was that a way of punishing her for an accident? This must be an action that would happen to a sixth world,if there is one.Not where we have Rule of LAW like we pretend to have.
I have a million questions to ask our honorable government, but won't fit here,so will rest at that....But this is sure SCARY people.I already have PTSD from this heineous act.

@ Wambui, the problem is not lack of laws, but inability to take them seriously.Add that to the corrupt judicial system and voila, you have anarchy .
There is also this sinister view that motor car owners are always at fault, when involved in an accident with a pedestrian,or a cyclist.Unfortunately this is not the first incident/accident that would bring out the "animal brutality" in a segment of our population.
At times the public is quick to blame the police. Here is acase where the victim truly needed protection from the public, and they responded.Yes I would like to think that the Kenyans of good will who were there out numbered these boda boda thugs. The question is did they just stand by...? Was is bystanders apathy?

Every time such things happen we wake up to knee jack reactions from Politicians . what we forget is that these kind of incidents happen in kenya every minute right infront of the police. Look at it this way :This was not an ordinary "wanjiku".The Inspector General cannot hold a press conference to address such a heinous act. Not that Journalists seem to have much to ask of such a "senior" Police officer who to me is not different from the ones on the street. It a has to take the head of state to order the IG to act. I can say this a million times. Unless the country has a leader who has the Guts to Reform the police force and the a Judiciary to go with it......Brace for more during the election time.
