Education CS Machogu Says Gov't to Stop Funding Public Universities

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has said the government will no longer fund public universities and colleges.

Citing the current financial crisis affecting most public universities and colleges, Machogu said the institutions must find alternative sources of income to ease pressure on the government.

He called on publicly-owned institutions of higher learning to embrace research, innovation, and technology to generate their own-sourced income as the government is in the process of withdrawing its financial support.

“In Kenya, education takes about 25.9 percent and we have to find other ways of creating and generating revenues for universities and they have to look at other revenues,” he said at the Dedan Kimathi University of Science and Technology in Nyeri on Saturday.

He added: “I’m going to move around each and every university in Kenya because a number is faced with financial problems and we are encouraging that they must generate their own income because the exchequer as it is now is not going to continue funding more.”

Last week, Universities Fund CEO Geoffrey Monari said it is becoming unsustainable for the government to increase allocation to support the institutions as the number of students qualifying for universities is increasing every year.

‘’The funding requirement for 2022 cohort of 145,145 students is Sh32.7 million while available funds are Sh12.6 million. The incoming cohort is larger than the graduates exiting by 52,195 hence it’s expected that the funding requirements will increase,” Monari said.

He indicated that the situation has been exacerbated by the 100 percent transition for students attaining a C+ and above which has increased access to universities.

Reduce the number of ministers and cut salaries.Education is a basic right .Why pay a MPIG who never went to university 1 million per month and deny a student whose research could help solve world problems the money to study or conduct research. This truly is a government of thieves you are cutting funding so that you can steal more for yourselves.Garbage in garbage out bottoms up my foot more like eat now when you still can

They need to switch the money they give political party to Universities & colleges. Being a member of a political party is not an investment.

Like Tha adage goes: "...if you think education is expensive, try ignorance!"

With Ruto having gone through the Kenya education system, you'd think he will provide first-hand and top notch solutions for higher education. I guess not, uni students don't need wheelbarrows, which is the fad of the moment: 100k wheelbarrows!

Change in Kenya will only be achieved by fighting corruption(starting with Ngina/Uhuru family loot of shs 1.5t) and downsizing the bloated/useless/idle govt duplicating every service.Constitution overhaul must be done to scrap luxuries like 48 governments to former provinces, reducing 49 parliaments to one, reducing 700+ministries/ministers to 25,scrapping 2/3 gender rule etc.Why have 370 MPs for 50m.and a reversing economy in Kenya yet California has 52 MPs for 40m plus millions of undocumented immigrants with the best sub-regional economy In the world.

Mr Machogu, the problem is not funding the private universities, The problem is absorbing all candidates that qualify to joins the university education. The Gov subsidizes or funds private universities because these universities, though private, they absorb rightly qualified students to study there, who otherwise would go to public universities if they have the capacity to absorb them all. I may be wrong but they get the money to cater to for the students who the public universities could not accommodate due to capacity issues. Let s look for funding in the right places. Let us repossess all stolen properties, let us recover all the NYS stolen money, and all monies stolen from all GOK institutions. Let us be morally upright as a country and the young generation can get their education with no issues.

Must fund forever. Now issue with the best brains in Univ is they are never creative to do research and come up with solutions to local issues. Of what use is their knowledge? They also have so much land which they don't put to proper use. Kenya still depends on China for basic items

They don't know what education is. They have never strived to put anything meaningful between their ears. They have taken shortcuts throughout their lives and loath professionals who have rigorously paid in sweat and blood to get to where they are. KENYA KWANZA VOTERS YOU F#&CKED UP KENYA! Hope you are very happy with these government decisions when your kids become as illiterate as Ruto and Gachagua. Dr. My Derriere! NKT

BUT POLITICAL PARTIES GOT 1.2 TRILLION.
I THINK WE HAVE OUR PRIORITIES MIXED UP.
But, this is a government of the Hyenas by Hyenas for the masses.
But sometimes you have to let folks suffer for them to wake up.

@Kora Kanini, yes we have out priorities mixed. There is no reason we should reduce funding for Healthcare, and education. Those two are the lifeline of our manpower. If only these two "items" were free for all mwananchi...It can be done if we prioritize them.
There are many places we could trim the fat.Starting with the boated government. For example what is the function of MCAs ?Mpigs make too much, and for what we are getting, we should trim their salaries by 35%.Iam tempted to suggest that we reduce salaries for judges, but Iam afraid that would make them mad and and prompt exorbitant bribes.

Where did this moron come from? The moron should be fired! The president said, “failure is not an option”, “you will be dismissed”! I think we already have two failures in this moron and the autocratic Markuman!!!
