American Man Held in Kenya Agrees to Return Home to Face Murder, Manslaughter Charges
An American man detained in Nairobi has agreed to be extradited to the United States, where he faces charges of third-degree murder, manslaughter and drug offences.
The suspect, who entered Kenya in 2022, has been held at Gigiri Police Station while his legal case was processed through the Milimani Law Courts. At a recent court hearing, he confirmed his willingness to return to the US without delay.
“Yes, Your Honour, and I would like to go back as soon as possible,” he said, signalling his cooperation in the extradition process.
This marks a change from earlier hearings, where the suspect had not yet given explicit consent, though he had indicated he would not contest the extradition request. With his formal agreement, Kenyan authorities are expected to move quickly to finalise arrangements for his transfer to Minnesota, where he is wanted for trial in the US District Court for the District of Minnesota.
Kenya’s legal framework allows for the prosecution of foreign nationals under its Penal Code, as well as deportation following conviction or immigration violations. In this case, the extradition process has taken priority, reflecting the gravity of the charges and cooperation between Kenya and the United States.
The US legal system maintains that American citizens abroad are still subject to local laws, and in some cases, federal jurisdiction can extend beyond national borders. The case is set to be mentioned again at the Milimani Law Courts on 17 December 2025, where the final steps of the extradition process will be confirmed.
Once complete, the suspect will be handed over to US authorities to face trial in Minnesota.
