Raila Storms Out of IEBC Meeting

John Wanjohi Sep 12, 2017

National Super Alliance (NASA) led by Raila Odinga on Tuesday walked out of a meeting called by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

The IEBC had organized a meeting with top leadership of Jubilee and (NASA at the Anniversary towers office in Nairobi to chart way forward for the forthcoming repeat presidential election.

The meeting, however, failed to kick off after NASA leaders walked out, citing the absence of Jubilee leaders and an agenda supplied to them by IEBC, which they said was only shared when they arrived for the talks.

NASA leaders, led by presidential candidate Raila Odinga arrived for the talks at Anniversary Towers at about 11am, but stormed out about an hour later, after Jubilee leadership failed to show up.

The leaders, who included his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka and co-principal Musalia Mudavadi, said they would not be part of the talks due to a ‘strange document’ issued to them by the Commission on arrival.

Moments after they left, Jubilee leaders led by DP William Ruto and JP secretary general Raphael Tuju arrived at Anniversary Towers and held brief discussions with the IEBC before addressing journalists to explain why they showed up late.

DP Ruto said they had arranged for a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting by the time the IEBC meeting was called on Monday night, and it was not possible to call it off.

Ruto was also accompanied to the meeting by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale and his Senate counterpart Kipchumba Murkomen.

The meeting has been rescheduled to a later date.
