Deputy President William Ruto Opposes Attempts to Amend the Constitution

Deputy President William Ruto has hit out at those calling for the amendment of the 2010 constitution.

In a statement on his Twitter handle, the DP wondered how people who campaigned for the new constitution are the very ones on the forefront pushing for it to be amended.

“Those who campaigned against the old constitution have started campaigning against the new one again! So,is the law the problem or they are?” he posed in a post on Twitter.

This comes after National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga last week announced that the opposition would form people's assembly to among other things review the constitution to “safe guard” democracy and devolution.

Raila is recognized among political leaders who vigorously campaigned for the passing of the existing constitution during a referendum held in 2010.

At the same time, a section of church leaders drawn from the National Council of Church of Kenya have also proposed amendments on the constitution to create Prime Minister, two deputies and official leader of opposition positions.

“NCCK recommends that Parliament should amend the constitution to include the position of a Prime Minister and two Deputy Prime Ministers and the restoration of the official leader of the opposition post,”NCCK Secretary General Reverend Peter Karanja said.

Ruto has termed such amendments as unnecessary and a waste of time. “If you cannot respect the Constitution that exists, then don't waste your time making a new one. It will suffer the same fate,” Ruto added in another Tweet.
