Gor Mahia, Tusker Draw Regional Heavyweights in Kagame Cup
Gor Mahia and Tusker FC have been handed difficult group-stage fixtures in the CECAFA Kagame Cup after the tournament draw was held in Kigali ahead of the competition, which runs from 24 July to 7 August.
The draw places Kenya's two representatives against some of East Africa's strongest clubs as they seek to progress to the knockout stage of one of the region's leading football tournaments. Gor Mahia, the reigning FKF Premier League champions, have been drawn in Group A with hosts APR FC, Uganda's Vipers SC and Djibouti's Garde Républicaine.
The group includes three clubs with strong records in regional football, making qualification highly competitive. Gor Mahia will aim to build on their domestic success by delivering strong performances against experienced opponents.
Tusker FC face another demanding assignment in Group C alongside Sudan's Al Hilal SC, Rwanda's Rayon Sports and Zanzibar champions KVZ FC. Al Hilal bring extensive continental experience, while Rayon Sports are expected to benefit from home support.
Tusker will need consistent results throughout the group stage to remain in contention for a place in the semi-finals. Kenya will also be represented by striker Joe Waithira, who plays for South Sudan's Jamus SC.
Jamus have been drawn in Group B with defending champions Singida Black Stars of Tanzania, Simba SC and Somalia's Mogadishu City Club. Waithira's side face a challenging group against two clubs widely regarded as leading contenders for the title.
The tournament format leaves little room for mistakes. Only the three group winners and the best second-placed team will qualify for the semi-finals. CECAFA Competitions Manager Yusuf Mossi said the format is designed to reward consistent performances throughout the group stage.
For Gor Mahia and Tusker, the tournament offers an opportunity to measure themselves against some of the region's strongest teams.
