South Africa Midfielder Dies Weeks after World Cup appearance
South African footballer Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25.
Mamelodi Sundowns confirmed his death on Saturday after his body was found at a residence in Cape Town. Police have opened an investigation, and the cause of death has not been established.
Adams died at a time when his career was reaching new heights. The midfielder played an important role in South Africa's campaign at the FIFA World Cup, starting two group-stage matches. He featured in the 1-1 draw against Czechia despite learning only hours earlier that his grandmother had died.
He also came off the bench in the 1-0 victory over South Korea, a result that secured South Africa's first qualification for the knockout stages of the tournament. Although he did not play in the round of 32 defeat to Canada, his contribution to the campaign was widely recognised.
Tributes were paid by figures from across football and government. The South African Football Players Union described Adams as a gifted player and a dedicated servant of the game, saying his death was a loss to his family, teammates and the wider football community.
Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie praised Adams' character and professionalism. He recalled offering his condolences after the death of the midfielder's grandmother and said Adams had responded with gratitude before continuing to represent his country.
Adams began his professional career at Stellenbosch FC before joining Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2025. He quickly became an important member of the squad and helped the club win the CAF Champions League in May.
After the victory, he dedicated the title to his late friend and former teammate Oshwin Andries, who died in 2023. Adams' death is the latest tragedy for Stellenbosch, which has also lost two other young players in recent years, including Jeandre Gaffoor earlier in 2026.
Adams' career took him from the Stellenbosch academy to the South African national team, where he became part of a squad that achieved a historic milestone at the World Cup. His performances reflected the progress he had made at club and international level and established him as one of the country's promising midfielders.
Police investigations into his death are continuing. Officials have urged the public not to speculate about the circumstances while inquiries remain ongoing. Adams is remembered by teammates, supporters and those who worked with him as a committed footballer who represented South Africa with professionalism and dedication.
