On January 28, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents executed a significant raid at Complete Autowash, a car wash in Philadelphia, resulting in the arrest of seven individuals for immigration violations.
This operation was initiated in response to allegations of labour exploitation among employees at the facility. During the raid, ICE agents conducted interviews with the workers, leading to the detention of seven individuals who were found to be residing in the US illegally. The detained individuals included six from Mexico and one from the Dominican Republic, who are now facing removal proceedings.
The operation has garnered attention due to its infrequency under the Biden administration. Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin notes that such worksite raids have become common under President Trump administration. A senior ICE official's reaction to the operation was succinctly expressed as "Wowsers," reflecting the operation's significance.
Tom Homan, former Border Czar under the Trump administration, has maintained that all individuals unlawfully present in the US are subject to enforcement actions, irrespective of their criminal records. This perspective aligns with the recent raid, which ICE officials characterized as affirming their commitment to national security and public safety.
Brian McShane, the acting Field Office Director for Enforcement and Removal Operations in Philadelphia, emphasizes that the successful conduct of the raid highlights the commitment and diligence of ICE officers in enforcing immigration laws and safeguarding communities against potential threats.
Since the inauguration of President Trump, ICE has intensified its enforcement efforts, reporting over 7,400 arrests across multiple states within a mere nine days.
These operations have encompassed raids on residences, workplaces, and other venues, with a focus on deporting individuals deemed as dangerous migrants to Guantánamo Bay. As of January 31, ICE confirmed a total of 7,412 arrests and nearly 6,000 detainers placed on individuals unlawfully residing in the country.
