Governor Mike Sonko Unleashes Anti-Mugging Squad to Neutralize Daylight Robbers in Nairobi CBD

The resurgence of daylight robbery along the streets of Nairobi's central business district has prompted Governor Mike Sonko to unveil an anti-mugging squad to neutralize the gang groups involved.

The Governor said officers of the squad will collaborate with Kenya Police officers to restore security in the streets of the capital city.

"After receiving several cases of insecurity within some section of Nairobi CBD my office today formed anti-mugging squad detectives" said Sonko.

Sonko further claimed that intelligence reports in his possession indicate that some politicians and businessmen are behind the syndicate. "We have also received intelligence report that some politicians and business people are funding youths to terrorize people. We are on lookout and several arrests will be made forthwith," he said.

Sonko's move comes following public outcry over the increased rate of daytime robbery within the city center, even in the streets previously considered safe.

The criminals mostly target individuals leaving bank premises, Mpesa shops and even pedestrians going about their businesses and snatch their valuables using all means including force.

Speaking on Monday, Nairobi chief security officer Tito Kilonzo said five suspects have so far been arrested for robbery with violence within the Nairobi CBD and would be arraigned on Monday.

"The five suspects will appear in court to face charges of robbery with violence," he said, adding that an anti- mugging squad has been formed.

Security officers have mapped out Temple and Hakati roads as well as Moi and Haile Selassie Avenues as the hot spots for the gangs.

We've been here before - ".....arraign in court on Monday" Really? The public court system is corrupt such that today they get arraigned, tomorrow they go scot-free. A far more effective strategy is to literally neutralize them / punch each with a bullet that will dispatch them to the other side. Anyone who's been mugged & robbed knows what I am talking about (I have been). And quite a few have been killed by these criminals, including a close friend. Why should they have justice when none of their victims had any?

I concur with you@ mlachake. Even if you have never been robbed, what wananchi do will go far in reducing chances of anybody being robbed or terrorized. Its also time for wananchi to bring back"necklessing".Otherwise, taking them to these corrupt courts,is a blessing to them. The only way to spare them from necklessing is for them to reveal politicians and the rich business men behind these terror. No point in wasting time in court these politicians and business men will face the same fate. And yes this crime fits the punishment.

These are NASA goons and hooligans and they need to be shot and killed if caught in action. Street sanity must be restored. Sometimes, it requires the bitter pill.

We all know there are no opportunistic, hungry, desperate people living in Nairobi who will take advantage of our joke of a government to make some money. Yup. Definitely being paid by politicians or businessmen. Bure kabisa!!
