Lukuyani MP Enock Kibunguchy Survives Suspected Assassination Attempt as Driver is Killed by Masked Gunmen

Likuyani MP Enock Kibunguchy narrowly survived a suspected assassination attempt on Sunday night after masked gunmen sprayed his car with bullets.
Kibunguchy's driver was however killed after he was shot in the head during the incident that happened at Soy Highway Motel along Eldoret–Kitale highway.
Kibunguchy who appeared to have been the target was whisked to safety following the 11pm incident. The gunmen later fled using the MP's car.
Witnesses said the MP's driver was shot dead as he attempted to get the car and help whisk Kibunguchy, who was inside the restaurant to safety. His body was taken to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Eldoret.
The second time MP was reportedly travelling to his rural home in Lukuyani, Kakamega County and had stopped at Highway Motel for refreshments at about 9pm. He was preparing to leave the restaurant when the assailants arrived.
“Fortunately, the MP was still upstairs when the attack happened. He was not injured but we suspect he was the target of the attack,”
Western Region Deputy police boss Leonard Omolo said.
Addressing the media on Monday afternoon, the MP claimed two of his political opponents want him dead.
“Personally, in my heart, I blame two people; I will not mention their names now but will reveal their identities in due time. I blame two people for causing the death of an extremely innocent person,” he said.
“I want to say that even if you kill Kibunguchy, you will never be Member of Parliament for Likuyani,” said Kibunguchy.
“There are some people with interests in our forest, and I’m putting them on notice, even if you kill Kibunguchy you will never get this forest. This forest belongs to our people, not to a few wealthy individuals.”
Kibunguchy said the incident was an attempt on his life and not a case of robbery gone wrong in any way.
“It was not robbery, it was targeted assassination. If it was robbery then why did they flee with the car only to later abandon it on the road? Why didn’t they inspect and make away with the contents of our pockets if it was robbery?” posed Kibunguchy.
