Change of Guard: Uhuru Hands over Instruments of Power to Ruto

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta formally handed over instruments of power to his successor William Ruto following his swearing-in on Tuesday.

Kenyatta, who was accompanied by Chief of Defense Forces Robert Kibochi, handed over the 2010 constitution and the ceremonial sword to Kenya's fifth president in a brief ceremony at Kasarani Stadium.

Immediately Ruto received the constitution, the aide-de-camp who was standing behind Kenyatta switched his position to become Ruto’s aide, indicating the change of guard.

Kenyatta then handed over the presidential ceremonial sword to Ruto to signify that he is the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. The sword is made of stainless steel and is coated with gold.

After receiving the instruments of power, Chief of Defense Forces Kibochi escorted Ruto to his seat. The fifth president was then accorded a 21-gun salute.

Uhuru had earlier inspected his last parade, after which Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took their respective oaths of office.

Ruto took the Oath of Allegiance of the President and the Oath of Execution of the Office of the President, which were administered by Chief Registrar of Judiciary Anne Amadi in the presence of Chief Justice Martha Koome and Attorney General Paul Kihara Kariuki. He proceeded to sign the certificates of the oaths of office.

The new President also received the Chief of the Order of the Golden Heart award, the highest accolade in the country.
