Businessman Jimi Wanjigi on Monday revealed that he was arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Nairobi.
Wanjigi, a vocal critic of the current administration led by President William Ruto, had responded to a police summons in connection with the Nane Nane protests held on August 8th. These protests criticized the government's borrowing practices which Wanjigi has publicly condemned as unsustainable and lacking proper legislative oversight. He has consistently accused the Ruto administration of leading the country down a dangerous path of excessive debt. Upon arrival at the DCI headquarters, Wanjigi was filmed confronting officers in response to their attempt to detain him.
He maintains that his arrest violates numerous court orders prohibiting such action. Despite his initial resistance, he eventually complied and was taken into custody. The Nane Nane demonstrations led to accusations against Wanjigi of financing the protests. He has vehemently denied these allegations and condemned a prior police raid on his residence as an unlawful attempt at intimidation. Wanjigi, a close ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga, has vowed to continue his criticism of the government's allegedly reckless borrowing practices.
The arrest has drawn strong reactions from various figures including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna who condemns the police action and emphasizes the importance of upholding court orders and the rule of law. He urges the Kenyan judiciary to intervene and secure Wanjigi's immediate release. This controversy unfolds despite the issuance of a search warrant on August 16th authorizing the DCI to search Wanjigi's property for evidence related to the alleged protest funding. The warrant permitted the seizure of ammunition, explosives, documents concerning firearm importation, and any other relevant materials.
However, this authorization came after the High Court extended existing orders that prevented Wanjigi's arrest until September 19, 2024. Wanjigi's legal team is fervently challenging the arrest, arguing that it blatantly disregards the law and undermines the principle of due process. Currently detained at Kamukunji Police Station, he is expected to appear before a magistrate at Milimani Senior Courts on August 20, 2024.
