Leaders from the Abagusii and Kuria communities convened on Monday to solidify a new political alliance aimed at fostering regional unity and cooperation in advance of the 2027 elections.
The meeting, which took place just hours after ODM leader Raila Odinga was heckled at a Shabana kit launch in Gusii stadium, included Members of Parliament from the Senate and National Assembly, Chief Executives, Chairpersons and Members of State Corporations, Vice Chancellors, senior civil servants, industry leaders, and members of the Council of Elders representing Kisii, Nyamira, and Migori counties. The alliance seeks to bridge historical divides and present a unified front, particularly given the rapidly evolving political landscape.
The meeting, the second such gathering of Abagusii leaders within a year, highlights a concerted effort to strategically unite the communities. Attendees included Kisii Council of Elders Chairperson James Matundura, Kuria East MP Marwa Kitayama, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, and National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro. Matundura emphasizes the importance of unity and collaboration, noting the meeting's focus on "the unity of our people and exploring areas of cooperation and engagement as one community."
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, a known critic of President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration, also attended, further highlighting the cross-political spectrum efforts to unite the region. Other notable participants included Solicitor General Shadrack Mose, MPs Steve Mogaka (West Mugirango), Zaheer Jhanda (Nyaribari Chache), Patrick Osero (Borabu), Gloria Orwoba (Nominated), and Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda, Joash Maangi.
The alliance between the Abagusii, who primarily reside in Kisii and Nyamira counties, and the Kuria, who are based in Migori County, is significant due to their shared Bantu linguistic heritage. A post-meeting dispatch emphasized "Strengthening Regional Synergy for Development," reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable progress and unity. This initiative aims to position both communities as a formidable force in the upcoming elections, potentially influencing the broader political landscape in Kenya. Speculation has arisen that the alliance will align in support of both President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
