President Ruto Courts Nyanza Voters with Key Projects in Migori County

President William Ruto began a two-day working tour of Migori County on Sunday, a region traditionally aligned with opposition leader Raila Odinga.
The visit highlights the President's strategic efforts to consolidate support in areas that overwhelmingly voted against him in the 2022 elections, signalling a calculated move to strengthen his foothold in Nyanza ahead of the 2027 re-election bid. The President's itinerary includes launching and commissioning several development projects, ranging from infrastructure to affordable housing and healthcare. Among the highlights are the Stella-Gogo-Sibuoche tarmac road and a 200-unit housing project in Uriri Constituency.
These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to demonstrate the government's commitment to equitable development across all regions, irrespective of political affiliations. Local MPs, including National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohammed and Uriri MP Mark Nyamita, have been actively involved in preparing for the visit, holding meetings to finalise the list of projects to be unveiled.
President Ruto's focus on Nyanza and Western Kenya is a strategic response to the potential erosion of support in the Mt. Kenya region, a critical voting bloc in his 2022 victory. By making inroads into Raila's strongholds, the President aims to diversify his electoral base and mitigate risks associated with shifting allegiances in Mt. Kenya. The visit follows a series of engagements by President Ruto in Nyanza, including a four-day extensive tour last August.
These interactions have been marked by a delicate balancing act, as the President seeks to navigate the complexities of his relationship with Raila. While the two leaders have shown signs of rapprochement, recent statements by Raila have added a layer of ambiguity to their political alignment. The opposition leader has reiterated that his party, ODM, remains firmly in opposition, even as some of his allies occupy key positions within the Kenya Kwanza administration.
The timing of the visit is particularly significant, coming days after opposition leaders voiced mixed sentiments about their relationship with the government. Raila's recent remarks defending governors James Orengo and Prof. Anyang Nyong'o, who have criticised the administration, further illustrate the nuanced interplay between collaboration and opposition. The political backdrop to President Ruto's visit is marked by shifting allegiances and strategic manoeuvring.
Raila's ODM party remains a significant force in Nyanza, and his influence continues to shape the region's political dynamics. At the same time, President Ruto's administration has sought to engage with local leaders and communities, aiming to address developmental needs and build bridges across political divides.
