Martha Karua Rejects Claims of Aligning with President Ruto

Martha Karua has denied claims that she is shifting her political allegiance towards President William Ruto, insisting she remains firmly in the opposition.
The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader rejected recent reports suggesting she is reconsidering her position and preparing to work with the Kenya Kwanza administration. The allegations, reportedly spread by a close associate of President Ruto, claimed Karua was following the example of her former running mate, Raila Odinga, who has recently engaged with the government through a Broad-Based Agreement.
Karua describes the claims as “fake news” and dismisses them as misleading. She says that her opinion of President Ruto remains unchanged, calling him “the most unsuitable character to ever have occupied high office.”
The former Justice Minister has made her position clear amid increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election. While some opposition leaders have begun forming new alliances, Karua reaffirms her break from Raila, citing his cooperation with Ruto as inconsistent with her principles.
Since announcing the split earlier this year, Karua has aligned with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s ‘wantam’ initiative, which challenges the legitimacy and performance of the current government. In her latest remarks, Karua emphasises that her political stance is guided by a commitment to accountability and constitutional governance.
“I do not belong to William Ruto’s praise choir,” she says, stressing her refusal to compromise on democratic standards.
Karua has also confirmed her intention to run for president in 2027. However, she notes that any potential future collaboration with Raila would depend on his full withdrawal from engagements with the Ruto administration.
