Senate Begins Impeachment Proceedings Against Nyamira Governor Nyaribo
The Senate will this afternoon begin proceedings on the impeachment of Nyamira Governor Amos Kimwomi Nyaribo, following his removal earlier this week by the County Assembly.
The sitting, set for 2:30 p.m., will commence the Senate’s formal review of the charges under Article 181 of the Constitution, Section 33 of the County Governments Act, and Senate Standing Orders. In a Gazette notice issued today, Speaker Amason Kingi instructed senators to convene for the hearing, during which he is expected to outline the procedural framework, including timelines for submissions and whether the matter will be considered in plenary or by a special committee.
Nyaribo was impeached on 25 November after 23 of the 31 Members of the County Assembly present voted in support of a motion tabled by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere. Four additional MCAs attempted to register their votes in writing, but their submissions were excluded from the official tally.
The motion accused the governor of abuse of office, irregular appointments, and failure to adhere to legal procedures. The charges include claims that the governor conducted county affairs through informal “Bunge Mashinani” forums, which opponents say lacked legal authority.
He is also accused of authorising county funds to support the endorsement of Peris Nyaboke-Oroko as Agriculture Minister during a period of assembly instability, and of making unlawful appointments to Keroka town committees and to a recruitment panel for the Public Service Board. These actions are alleged to have occurred between October 2024 and June 2025.
This marks the third attempt to remove Nyaribo from office, reflecting ongoing political divisions within Nyamira’s leadership. The Senate’s decision will either confirm his removal or allow him to resume his duties.
