Senator Moi Speaks Out After He was Blocked from Being Installed as Kalenjin Spokesman
Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has spoken out after youths blocked him from being installed as the Kalenjin spokesman on Saturday.
Moi, who is also the Kanu party leader, was headed to Kapsisiywa in Nandi County where he was scheduled to be installed as the community’s leader.
But rowdy youths chanting Deputy President William Ruto’s name barricaded the road leading to the home of Councillor Christopher Arap Koyoki, who was to preside over the coronation of Senator Moi as the official leader of the Kalenjin community.
This forced Moi and his convoy to make a U-turn and proceed to Kabiyet shopping center where he addressed a gathering before he left the area.
Moi through a statement released by his Secretary of Press Joseph Towett blamed his political rivals for the incident, which he described as an act of cowardice.
"We view this as an act of cowardice by well-known political detractors whose main pre-occupation has always been desperate attempts to curtail the ever growing influence of other leaders in the region and to suppress the democratic space for their own selfish interest,” Moi noted.
“We wish to take this opportunity to commend the innocent youth, some of whom have confessed as having been hired to cause mayhem, for the civil manner they conducted themselves despite being incited to act on the contrary.”
He vowed to continue with his grassroots political engagements across the country ahead of the 2022 general election.
“I wish to reaffirm that this is just the beginning of the series of activities the Senator has embarked on to reach out to the people of Kenya and neither violence nor intimidation will stop him,” the statement added.
