Police Officer Returns Sh450,000 to a Couple Involved in a Road Accident

A senior police officer has warmed the hearts of many Kenyans after returning Sh450,000 to a couple following an accident along Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Timothy Njuguna, his wife Martha Muthoni and their child were heading to Mombasa for the Christmas holiday after a long day from work when their vehicle collided with a lorry at the Maungu area in Voi, Taita Taveta County on Sunday. The two sustained minor injuries and were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

When police officers came to the hospital, Njuguna informed them that he was carrying cash in his vehicle, prompting them to rush to the accident scene.

Luckily, the officers led Inspector Job Oyagi, who heads the traffic department, were able to recover the money from the wrecked vehicle more than an hour after the accident and handed it back to Njuguna in a rare act of kindness.

"When we got to the hospital in Maungu, the man told us that he had money in his car and he had not seen it. We decided to rush to the scene and we found people ransacking the vehicle. Some wanted to steal items from that car," Inspector Oyagi said.

"We did not find the battery of the car. So we decided to search the people who we found there and also look inside the car and we found the money which totalled to Sh450,000."

Njuguna and his wife thanked Inspector Oyagi and his officers for finding and returning the money.

The couple, who runs a clothes business, had planned to deposit the money in a bank once they arrived in Mombasa since they did not have the time to do so before the journey.

@ Ukweli, Iam with you on this. It should be news if the police had not returned the money. Why do we act like the officer did something we would not do.Wouldnt you want your money returned to you by whoever finds it?That's the right thing to do. And yes Iam not naive to think that there are no thieves.Certainly a thief would not return such"fortune".But that should not discourage the right thinking people to keep on doing the right thing.Of all people,we expect at least the person who swore to protect, and defend people and their property to act in such a manner.Dont we?

The 1 hour factor for looters to ransack a vehicle - and come out with nothing - is purely lucky for the victim to get his cash back. Well this time good job inspector Oyugi and term.

Something is not clear how the looters haven’t seen the money after one hour of search I might be wrong but the money all this time may be in the police pockets and after they were alerted they thought second time and decided to give it back

You may be right only if the media failed to inform that the Police were first at the scene of the accident. Additionally, this situation of Police presences in scene of accident is normal at any given place and time on this planet.
