Kenyan Nurse Faith Mbori Quits High-paying US Job Over Burnout
Faith Mbori, a Kenyan nurse, has left her high-paying role in the United States to return home, citing severe stress and anxiety as key factors in her decision.
Mbori, who has over 15 years of international nursing experience, previously worked in Kenya, the Philippines, and the United States. At the height of her career abroad, she earned more than KSh 1.8 million per month and often managed multiple jobs to maximise her income. Despite these financial rewards, she faced long hours, hostile work environments, and recurring panic attacks.
In explaining her choice, Mbori said, “Money is important, yes, but it is not everything. Choose yourself. Every single time.” Her statement resonates strongly with members of the Kenyan diaspora.
Her experience also highlights a broader issue of burnout in global healthcare systems. In the United States, medical professionals face extreme stress due to staff shortages, emotionally taxing work, and extended hours. Back in Kenya, she has adopted a slower pace of life, volunteering in local hospitals, exploring entrepreneurial ventures, and focusing on her well-being.
