Raila Rejects October 17th Date for Repeat Election Set by IEBC

National Super Alliance (Nasa) chief Raila Odinga has dismissed the October 17th date for repeat election set by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

Addressing the press at Wilson Airport on Tuesday morning, the former Prime Minister said he would not accept the date because Electoral Commission (IEBC) set the date without consulting him and other stakeholder as stipulated in law.

Raila claimed that the date was set by President Uhuru's Jubilee Party and not IEBC.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader also demanded legal and constitutional guarantees from IEBC that the fresh election will be free and fair before the agency carries on with its preparations.

Flanked by his running mate Kalonzo Musyoka and co-principals Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetang'ula, the opposition chief said that IEBC had not complied with the court order of conducting "a free, fair and verifiable election".

He maintained that staff and system changes at the at the commission must be effected, saying there would be no repeat election if the changes are not done. He also demanded for an audit of technology used to transmit election results.

"It is therefore inappropriate and foolhardy for IEBC to embark on the planning of a fresh elections without full compliance with the Supreme Court orders and in the redeployment of technology in the fresh presidential election,” he said.

“We therefore demand audit of technology in full compliance with the law.”

Odinga also wants a review of the voters register and polling stations.

"It is important to have full clarity in relation to the voters register and the polling stations," he said.

"There will be no elections on the 17th unless these our demands are met," Odinga said.
