DPP Orders for Arrest and Prosecution of Former CS Hassan Wario over Sh55 Million Scam
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has ordered for arrest and prosecution of former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario over Sh55 million scam.
Wario will be charged alongside former Sports Principal Secretary Richard Ekai and former
National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) boss Kipchoge Keino over misappropriation of funds set aside for 2016 Rio Olympics.
In a statement on Saturday, the DPP said the suspects will be charged 12 counts of abuse of office and willful failure to comply with laws relating to the management of taxpayers cash.
The three, together with other officials are accused of using the cash for purchase of unutilized flight tickets, overpayment of allowances totaling Sh15M and incurring expenditure of Sh6 million on unauthorized persons.
Haji said he was satisfied that there is enough evidence to charge the officials with the misappropriation of more that Sh55 million.
"Upon independent review and consideration of evidence contained in the inquiry file, I am satisfied that there is sufficient evidence to charge the above suspects for misappropriation of over Sh55 million," Haji said.
Others officials implicated in the scandal include Harun Komen (former Director of Administration in the ministry of Sports), Francis Kanyili (former Secretary General, NOCK) and Patrick Kimathi (former Finance Officer, ministry of Sports).
Wario is currently the Kenya's ambassador to Austria.
