Governor Mike Sonko Opposes Bill Seeking to Scrap Nairobi County
Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has dismissed a Bill seeking to have Nairobi County dissolved and placed under the jurisdiction of the National Government.
In the Bill, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot wants Nairobi be managed by a Cabinet Secretary that will be appointed by the President.
Senator Cheruiyot, the drafted the Bill, says that Nairobi needs better management, utilization of resources and better planning given that it's a cosmopolitan area that cannot be compared to other rural counties.
"The Nairobi Capital City shall be known as Nairobi and shall be the seat of the National Government."
"The President shall appoint a Cabinet Secretary who shall exercise such powers and perform duties delegated to him by the President from time to time," the proposal outlines in part.
However Governor Sonko has told off the Kericho Senator saying he should focus on his own county.
“He (Senator Cheruiyot) is acting within his constitutional rights but he should know that Nairobi has its own people and this is a complex matter that requires a referendum.
“He is the Kericho Senator, he cannot purport to be making a decision of for more than 5 million Nairobi residents,” said Sonko.
The Senate Justice and Legal Affairs committee, chaired by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargey, deliberated the Bill on Wednesday ahead of its presentation on the floor of the House.
