DP Ruto Should Quit Gov’t to Lead Opposition, US-Based Lawyer Makau Mutua Says

US-based Kenyan scholar Prof. Makau Mutua says Deputy President William Ruto should quit government to lead the opposition.

Mutua, who spoke during an interview on Citizen TV’s JKL show on Wednesday night, claimed that it was clear that Kenyatta and DP Ruto had fallen out and the latter should do himself justice by leaving the government.

He further noted that Kenyatta has shown he is tired of Ruto as evidenced by his dalliance with ODM leader Raila Odinga and his focus at the moment is to build a legacy. Mutua also reminded Ruto that it is impossible to become President without Kenyatta’s support.

“You do not become President from Deputy without the President’s support. It is clear that Mr. Kenyatta has lost all patience with his deputy and is interested in building his legacy. Mr. Ruto should leave Jubilee to lead the opposition,” said Mutua.

Mutua, who is also a lawyer, reckoned that there exists a bond between Kenyattas and Odingas that is hard for DP Ruto to break, noting that the two families have been together for decades and nothing seems to put them aloof.

“The Kenyatta’s and Odinga’s have always controlled particular electorates. Ruto fans are hoping he will come out of nowhere and all of a sudden put asunder these two families and that is not going to happen,” noted Mutua.
