Lamu Senator Anwar Loitiptip was on Monday arraigned in court for allegedly shooting and injuring a woman.

Loitiptip appeared before Nanyuki Resident Magistrate Vincent Masivo but did not take a plea as the prosecution requested to hold him for five days to conclude investigations.

The magistrate rejected the application and released him on a cash bail of Sh500,000 or Sh1 million bond.

The court barred Senator Loitiptip, who is to be charged with causing grievous harm and unlawful use of a firearm, from visiting Nanyuki for the next five days.

The politician turned himself in to police on Sunday evening, hours after the shooting incident in Nanyuki town. He is alleged to have shot a 32-year-old woman in the wee hours of Sunday morning following a quarrel.

The woman sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she is receiving treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

Officers from Nanyuki Police Station received a report of a shooting incident at Kanu Grounds in Nanyuki Town at around 2:00 am. They went to the scene and established that the woman identified as Joy Makena had been shot on her right leg above her ankle.

The officers recovered two spent 9mm cartridges from the scene, a firearm, and 13 rounds of ammunition.
